This discussion will focus on two topics: (1) the forthcoming update to the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), including the multimodal elements incorporated into the manual, and (2) the forthcoming Second Edition of Roundabouts: An Informational Guide. The 2010 HCM has been reorganized into four volumes that present concepts, methodologies, and supplemental details at the different levels required by the many HCM audiences (e.g., junior analysts, experienced professionals, decision-makers, researchers, and software developers). A significant enhancement to the HCM is a multimodal approach throughout the manual: rather than separate stand-alone chapters for pedestrians, bicycles, and transit, information relevant to those modes is presented side-by-side with material for the automobile mode wherever feasible.

The Second Edition of Roundabouts: An Information Guide represents a major update to the 2000 edition, building on ten years of experience throughout the United States and significant research on how American roundabouts work from a safety and operational perspective. It continues the principle-based approach of the first edition while providing many more examples of applications and design treatments used around the United States.

Kittelson & Associates, Inc. is under contract with the National Highway Cooperative Research Program (funded through AASHTO) to produce both documents, which are expected to be released in 2010.

There is no cost to attend this brown bag lunch session and beverages will be provided. The workshop is equal to 2.0 continuing education credits (CE).

Lee Rodegerdts, PE

Lee has over 17 years of broad experience in traffic operations, traffic design, transportation planning, and transportation research and education. He has been involved in all aspects of roundabout consulting, research, and guide development since 1997. Lee has served as Principal Investigator for major national research projects on roundabouts, including NCHRP Project 3-65A, Update of FHWA's Roundabouts: An Informational Guide, and NCHRP Report 572, Roundabouts in the United States. He has also been heavily involved in the 2010 Highway Capacity Manual, both as the lead author of five chapters on unsignalized intersections and as a member of the TRB Committee on Highway Capacity and Quality of Service. He is a registered civil engineer in Alaska and twelve other states.
