Freeway Analysis & Software in the HCM 6th Edition: The Role of Active Traffic Management Strategies

Kittelson and Associates will offer a FREE 2 hour workshop in Oakland, CA on Thurs, March 2nd, 2017. The workshop will cover freeway analysis methods and software in the new edition of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) 6th edition, released in fall 2016.

FREEVAL is a powerful computational tool that models freeway operations and congestion in a single day, as well as whole-year reliability context. The tool automates estimation of congestion impacts from freeway bottlenecks, work zones, incidents, and weather, and can then explore mitigation of impacts through active traffic and demand management strategies, including ramp metering, hard shoulder running, incident management, traffic diversion, and others. The tool automates computations in the HCM 6th Edition freeway facility and freeway reliability networks, and is the official computational tool that has been used to develop and test the methods.

The focus of this two-hour workshop is on application and use cases of the methods to real-world sites and problems, ranging from interchange analyses, to work zone lane closure and diversion scenarios, up to whole-year reliability assessment of hard shoulder running and ramp metering strategies.

3:30 pm – 3:45 pm: Registration & Introductions

3:45 pm – 5:30 am: FREEVAL presentation:
